Cyprus 'Golden Passport' Case: Syllouris and Giovannis Acquitted

The Permanent Criminal Court of Nicosia acquitted former House Speaker Demetris Syllouris and businessman Christakis Giovannis in a case related to the investor citizenship program. The decision, reached by a majority vote, was based on the lack of sufficient evidence to support the charges. Judge M. K. Loizou dissented, stating she would have convicted the two on one of the three charges. The case originated after a report by Al Jazeera was published, however the court ruled that the video does not constitute valid evidence. The court highlighted significant investigative gaps, such as the absence of key witnesses and the non-submission of messages that could have shed light on the case. The charges concerned trading in influence and conspiracy to defraud. The case of Andreas Pittatzis, who was initially charged, had previously been suspended.
