Former Cyprus FA President Faces Charges - Court Appearance Scheduled

Former President of the Cyprus Football Federation (CFA), Giorgos Koumas, is set to appear in court on February 26, 2026, facing 25 charges. The charges relate to potential conflicts of interest and money laundering from illegal activities, allegedly committed between 2015 and 2025. According to the indictment, Mr. Koumas, during his tenure at the CFA, maintained connections with companies and organizations such as the Cyprus Telecommunications Authority, Cablenet, GO PLC, the Nicosia Race Club, and the Cyprus Basketball Federation, violating the Law on Combating Manipulation of Sports Events and the Penal Code. These activities included the production and broadcasting of sporting events, the management of television rights, and the exploitation of internet and mobile rights. He is also accused of laundering approximately €6.5 million, derived from the aforementioned activities. Alongside Mr. Koumas, two companies allegedly under his control are also charged. During the initial court appearance, a request for an adjournment is expected to allow the defense time to review the evidence.
