Flu Deaths Rise in Cyprus: Total Reaches 13

The number of deaths of patients with laboratory-confirmed influenza in Cyprus has risen to 13, following the recent death of a 54-year-old man in a private hospital. Deputy Director General of the Ministry of Health, Dr. Elisavet Konstantinou, stated that the flu has broken the age 'barrier' of the elderly. Six of the latest deaths were recorded in recent days, with five occurring over the weekend. Dr. Konstantinou noted that the epidemic is at its peak but is beginning to show signs of recession. She also stressed that the health system is manageable, despite the pressure on both the public and private sectors. There is an adequate supply of antiviral drugs and diagnostic tests, and there has been a high response to vaccination, with over 145,000 vaccinations administered.
