Increase in Card Payment Fraud

Card payment fraud is increasing, following technological progress and exploiting the trust and ignorance of users. In the first half of 2025, in Cyprus, 92% of fraud cases involved card payments, reaching around 15,000 cases, while the total volume of fraud cases increased by 30% and their total value by 66%, reaching almost €4 million. The higher rate of fraud in Cyprus compared to the Eurozone (92% versus 81%) is explained by the more frequent use of card payments in Cyprus. Credit card payments are more often affected by fraud compared to debit card payments, due to higher spending limits. Manipulating the payer is the main form of fraud in credit transfers (59%), while unauthorized transactions (card details theft, loss or theft of card) are the dominant form of fraud in card payments (97%) and electronic money (100%). The Central Bank emphasizes the need for increased vigilance and user awareness to avoid fraud.
