Golden Dawn Trial Concludes at Appeals Court, 13-Year Sentences Upheld

The Appeals Court has upheld the sentences for members of the Golden Dawn leadership, sentencing Nikos Michaloliakos and five others to 13 years in prison, while Artemios Matthaiopoulos received a 10-year sentence. The convictions relate to leading a criminal organization. The life sentence of Giorgos Roupakias for the murder of Pavlos Fyssas was also confirmed, with an additional 10 years. The Appeals Court's decision also concerns members convicted of belonging to the criminal organization, with sentences ranging from 5 to 7 years, putting Eleni Zaroulia at risk of imprisonment. The lawyers of the convicted are trying to prevent the immediate execution of the sentences. It is noted that none of the 42 convicted were present in court to hear the verdict, with the exception of Ioannis Lagos. Pavlos Fyssas' mother, Magda Fyssa, was present and expressed her satisfaction with the confirmation of the life sentence for Roupakias. This decision marks the end of a long legal battle that began 13 years ago, with the conviction of Golden Dawn members for criminal activities, including the murder of Pavlos Fyssas and attacks on immigrants. The case had provoked strong reactions and had questioned the democratic functioning of the political system.
