Mario Banousi Wins Silver Lion at Venice Biennale Theatre

Greek-Albanian director Mario Banousi, just 27 years old, has been awarded the Silver Lion at the 2026 Venice Biennale Theatre, making him the youngest winner in the event's history. The decision was made by the Biennale's Board of Directors, following a recommendation from actor Willem Dafoe, who highlighted the value of Banousi's work. Simultaneously, the Golden Lion was awarded to Italian theatre and opera director Emma Dante for her overall contribution. Willem Dafoe, explaining the reasoning behind the award, emphasized the autobiographical nature of Banousi's work, which explores themes of grief, absence, and family traditions. Banousi's language is characterized by poetry and silence, yet it is deeply evocative and communicative. Banousi's work focuses on memory, the sounds of everyday life, and small moments, highlighting both familiar and universal rituals. Through radical realism and abstract perspectives, he creates symbolic journeys into the archetypes of humanity. Banousi himself expressed his surprise and gratitude for the award, connecting it to his family's history, migration, and the difficulties he faced. He emphasized that the award will serve as a reminder of his roots and the reason he creates.
