From My Notebook: The First to Suffer is Democracy Itself

The author reminisces about the 1990s and the functioning of the House of Representatives, highlighting a time with a new generation of well-prepared and respectful Members of Parliament. The writer describes the detailed information provided to MPs on every issue, the polite behaviour, and the avoidance of self-promotion, which he considers rare today. He points out that the Parliament at that time represented the “temple of democracy” and that respect for institutions is vital for their maintenance. The author expresses concern about the current state, where Parliament does not enjoy the same respect, and emphasizes that the destruction of an institution can also happen unintentionally, like the destruction of temples due to a lack of faith. He concludes by mentioning the scandal of the citizenship-by-investment scheme and the acquittal of those involved, questioning the incompetence or corruption of the authorities.
