From Prevention to Immediate Response: New Measures for the Fire Season

The new National Fire Coordinator, Fire Chief Nikos Longinos, held his first coordination meeting with all relevant services and agencies for the fire season. The meeting, held in the crisis management room of the Fire Department Headquarters, highlighted the importance of prevention and coordination for effectively tackling fires. Chief Longinos acknowledged the difficulties in coordinating services but expressed confidence that by adhering to national plans, they will be able to handle any situation. At the same time, the need to revise existing fire safety plans was highlighted, as many of them are outdated and need updating. The Fire Service and the Forestry Department pledged to make every effort to prevent fires from starting and to limit their spread if they do occur. The Ministry of Defense announced the strengthening of operational capabilities with 7 aircraft and 4 helicopters by May 1st, thus enhancing the aerial firefighting force. The meeting aimed to ensure the readiness of all involved parties before the start of the fire season, with emphasis on preparation, coordination and revision of existing plans. Chief Longinos stressed the need for realism and recognition that nature is unpredictable, but pledged daily contact with the Meteorological Department and the timely implementation of measures in areas with a high risk of fire. Cooperation and information exchange between services are considered crucial for effective fire management.
