From Energy Isolation to Climate Neutrality

Cyprus, energetically isolated from the rest of the European Union, faces the urgent need for a comprehensive national energy strategy. This strategy should be based on the utilization of its natural resources, renewable energy sources, and regional cooperation, given its high dependence on imported fossil fuels and the EU's climate commitments. The article highlights a long-standing weakness of the Cypriot state in implementing a cohesive energy policy, culminating in the failure to import natural gas. This weakness is attributed to problems in managing infrastructure projects, a lack of long-term planning, and political inconsistency. This situation has led to economic losses, energy insecurity, and delays in important projects, such as the Great Sea Interconnector electricity interconnection. The need for a strong and long-term energy strategy is even more pressing due to geopolitical challenges and Turkey's energy strategy.
