86% of Available Energy in Cyprus Comes from Oil, According to Eurostat

According to Eurostat, Cyprus is highly dependent on oil for its energy needs, with 86% of available energy coming from it in 2024. Furthermore, Cyprus imported 96% of its energy from oil products, recording the highest dependency rate in the European Union. Despite the high dependence on oil, Cyprus has significant renewable energy production, covering 96% of domestic production. This places it among the EU countries with the highest renewable energy production, along with Malta, Latvia and Portugal. At the EU level, 43% of available energy came from domestic production and 57% from imports in 2024. The EU's energy mix consists mainly of oil (38%), natural gas (21%), renewable energy sources (20%), nuclear energy (12%) and solid fuels (10%). Renewable energy sources were the dominant source of production in the EU in 2024, followed by nuclear energy, solid fuels and natural gas. Dependence on energy imports varies significantly between member states, with Cyprus, Malta and Luxembourg recording the highest rates.
