Ancient Trade Networks Revealed: Excavations at Hala Sultan Tekke

Excavations at the Hala Sultan Tekke site in Cyprus have unearthed two chamber tombs dating back to the 14th century BC, providing significant insights into the Late Bronze Age. The good preservation of the tombs, due to the collapse of their roofs, allowed for the detailed documentation of the burial customs and social organization of the city's inhabitants. Particular emphasis is placed on the discovery of numerous imported objects, such as Mycenaean and Aegean pottery, ivory from Egypt, lapis lazuli from Afghanistan, carnelian from India, and amber from the Baltic, demonstrating the city's role as an international trade hub. The long-term use of the tombs suggests family continuity, while the rich grave goods indicate that they belonged to members of the ruling class. Future DNA analyses are expected to shed further light on issues of kinship and origin.
