ICE Agents to Withdraw from Minneapolis Following Outcry Over Pretty's Death

Published January 27, 2026, 07:24

Federal agents deployed to Minneapolis are beginning to withdraw following the death of Alex Pretty during a protest against the implementation of the former president's immigration policies. The withdrawal comes amid a storm of criticism, even from within Donald Trump's own political camp, regarding the hardline approach taken in the city. Trump announced via Truth Social that he had a “very good” phone conversation with the state governor and the mayor of Minneapolis. The mayor, Jacob Frey, stated that some federal agents are already leaving and pledged to continue working towards a full withdrawal. Tom Homan, tasked with continuing Trump's mass deportation policy, will replace the Border Patrol chief. Minneapolis has limited cooperation with ICE, effectively operating as a 'sanctuary' city for immigrants. The judiciary is reviewing requests to protect evidence in the Pretty and Good cases, with a decision expected regarding the suspension of the anti-immigration operation.
