Verdict in Syllouris and Giovannis 'Golden Passport' Case to be Announced

Today, February 17th, the Permanent Criminal Court of Nicosia will announce its verdict in the 'golden passport' case involving former House President Demetris Syllouris and former MP Christakis Giovannis. The two defendants face charges of corruption and abuse of power. The case concerns the exploitation of their institutional position to influence or expedite the process of granting citizenship to foreign investors. The prosecution argues that critical information was not brought to the attention of the relevant authorities at the time, influencing decision-making. The defense rejected the charges, alleging abuse of process and a violation of the defendants' right to a fair trial. The case is based on the findings of the Nikolatou Investigative Committee, which documented weaknesses and omissions in the citizenship program. Today's decision by the Criminal Court will determine whether the two former officials are guilty or innocent of the offenses attributed to them, in a case that has generated significant political and institutional interest.
