US-Cyprus Defense Cooperation: New Projects and Investments Revealed

Defense cooperation between Cyprus and the United States is being strengthened with new projects and equipment, as revealed in a US memorandum. The main pillars of cooperation include the upgrading of defense infrastructure (Paphos Air Base, Mari Naval Base, Larnaca KED), the procurement of defense equipment, military training (with access for Cypriot military personnel to West Point and the Air Force Academy), and the military cooperation program, with an emphasis on aerial firefighting. The United States is committed to significant funding for the upgrading of Cypriot defense infrastructure to meet the modern needs of the National Guard, the EU, and NATO. US experts have already conducted on-site inspections at the Paphos Air Base to develop expansion plans, while NAVFAC funded the construction of facilities at the Larnaca KED and the Mari Naval Base. By upgrading its infrastructure, Cyprus aims to enhance its defense capabilities and play a more significant role in regional security.
