Cyprus: Foreign Ministry Expresses Disappointment with UN 'Equal Distances'

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs expressed its disappointment with the United Nations' long-standing tendency to maintain 'equal distances' in its reports on the Cyprus issue, which, according to the Ministry, leads to a fragmented and inaccurate picture of the situation. At the same time, it welcomed the reaffirmation of the UN Secretary-General's commitment to restarting negotiations, based on the agreed framework and relevant Security Council resolutions. The Ministry shares the Secretary-General's satisfaction with the substantive discussions held in Crans Montana and stressed that only through discussion of all fundamental aspects of the Cyprus issue can real progress be achieved. It also expressed concern over violations by the occupying army in the buffer zone, particularly in the Deryneia area, and reiterated that Turkey bears sole responsibility for the situation in Varosha.
