Threat to the Production Chain – Dairy Farmers Issue Strong Warning

The Cyprus Dairy Farmers Association has issued an urgent statement regarding the outbreak of foot-and-mouth disease, describing the situation as very serious and demanding immediate action from all stakeholders. The Association emphasizes that the disease is not merely a veterinary issue, but affects agricultural production, dairy farming, exports, and the Cypriot economy. Although the spread of the disease is not under the control of dairy farmers, the Association highlights the severe consequences for the production chain and the sustainability of the sector. It commits to cooperating with the competent authorities to protect livestock and the economy. The products of its members are safe, as foot-and-mouth disease is not transmitted to humans through food. The Association calls on the Veterinary Services to implement strict measures to limit the disease, strengthening controls and the application of biosecurity protocols. The flawless functioning of the state mechanism is considered essential to prevent worse consequences and safeguard livestock and milk production. Furthermore, the Association requests the Ministry of Justice and the Police to investigate any criminal offenses related to the outbreak and spread of the disease, especially regarding the possible illegal trafficking of animal feed from the occupied territories. Finally, it calls on livestock farmers to strictly adhere to the instructions of the authorities and implement biosecurity measures, emphasizing collective and individual responsibility.
