Supreme Court Rejects Tychikos' Appeal for Extension to File Recourse

The Supreme Court of Cyprus rejected the appeal of former Bishop of Paphos, Tychikos, for an extension to file a recourse regarding his dismissal from office. Tychikos sought to file an application for special writs (Certiorari, Mandamus, Prohibition) against the decisions of the Holy Synod of the Church of Cyprus and the Ecumenical Patriarchate that dismissed him. The court ruled that the application was filed late, beyond the 45-day deadline from the date of knowledge of the decisions, and that there were no sufficient exceptional circumstances to justify the extension. The court emphasized that the application should be filed as soon as possible after the decision is issued and that any delay must be justified by reasons beyond the ordinary, requiring an extension of time for reasons of justice. The Holy Synod of the Ecumenical Patriarchate had upheld the decision of the Holy Synod of Cyprus, pointing out omissions in the procedure but confirming the unanimous decision to dismiss him.
