Supreme Court Rejects Tychikos' Request to Extend Deadline for Privileged Writs

The Supreme Court of Cyprus has rejected the application of former Bishop of Paphos, Tychikos, to extend the deadline for submitting an application for privileged writs. Tychikos sought to overturn the decisions of the Holy Synod of the Church of Cyprus and the Holy Synod of the Ecumenical Patriarchate, which had deposed him from his position. The former Bishop was seeking the issuance of privileged writs (Certiorari, Mandamus and Prohibition) to annul the aforementioned decisions. His application was rejected due to exceeding the 45-day deadline stipulated by the regulation for submitting such applications. The court ruled that Tychikos was aware of the decisions from the date of their issuance and that there were no sufficient reasons for the delay in submitting the application. “Special, beyond the ordinary” reasons are required to justify an extension of the deadline, which was not proven in this case. The Supreme Court's decision marks a significant step in the case, as Tychikos will not be able to appeal to the court through privileged writs. The case is expected to continue through other means.
