Foot-and-Mouth Disease to Drive Up Meat Prices for Easter

The President of the Cyprus Consumers Association, Marios Drousiotis, expressed strong concern about the adequacy of the market and the expected increase in meat prices ahead of Easter, due to the spread of foot-and-mouth disease and the death of thousands of animals. The shortage of local meat will be covered by imports, however international prices remain high, which will burden consumers. Price increases are expected for lamb, and there are reservations about the production of PDO halloumi due to reduced goat and sheep milk production. The Consumers Association is calling for an investigation into the causes that led to the outbreak of the disease and the timely taking of measures. To date, losses are estimated at around 13,000 animals.
