Cyprus Parliament Supports Congenital Heart Disease Awareness

The House of Representatives expressed its support for individuals facing congenital heart disease, reaffirming its commitment to strengthening the institutional and legal framework governing healthcare services. President of the House, Annita Demetriou, referred to World Congenital Heart Disease Day (February 14th) and emphasized the importance of early diagnosis and research. In Cyprus, approximately 50 to 80 children are born annually with congenital heart disease, while the total number of people suffering from these conditions is estimated at around 4,000. Congenital heart disease is the most common birth defect and a significant cause of mortality during the first year of life. Ms. Demetriou stated that thanks to advances in medical science, over 80% of children with congenital heart disease can have normal development and quality of life, despite the challenges they face. She stressed the need for equal access to healthcare services for all patients. The Parliament is committed to continuing to support research and development in the field of congenital heart disease, as well as promoting policies that will improve the quality of life for patients and their families.
