Alarming Increase in Colon Cancer Cases in Younger Adults in Cyprus

An alarming increase in colon cancer cases is being observed in younger adults in Cyprus. Approximately 350 to 400 new cases are recorded each year, making the disease the third most common form of cancer on the island. The Cyprus Gastroenterological Society emphasizes the importance of prevention and early diagnosis, as colon cancer can be largely prevented and treated effectively, especially when detected early. Key risk factors include an unhealthy diet, obesity, a sedentary lifestyle, smoking, and family history. Colonoscopy is the most reliable method of prevention and diagnosis, while early diagnosis significantly increases the success rates of treatment.
