Concerns and Objections Raised Regarding Political Advertising Control Law

During a session of the Parliamentary Committee on Interior, all participating stakeholders expressed concern and objections regarding the Ministry of Interior's bill on the control of political advertising. The main focus of the objections is the assignment of the supervisory role to the Radio Television Authority, which already faces shortages in personnel, resources, and infrastructure. The President of the Radio Television Authority, Rona Kasapi, pointed out that assigning new responsibilities without adequate support casts doubt on the Authority's role as a guardian of democratic values. Ms. Kasapi stated that the Authority has already taken on significant supervisory responsibilities within the framework of legislation for digital services and does not have the necessary resources to meet additional tasks. Representatives from the Union of Journalists, the Committee on Journalistic Ethics, the Publishers Association, and the Radio Broadcasters Association agreed with the Authority's concerns, emphasizing the need for a clear separation between advertising and journalistic content and the establishment of measurable evaluation criteria. The discussion highlighted the need for careful consideration of the bill and the provision of adequate support to the Radio Television Authority, in order to ensure effective oversight of political advertising and the protection of democracy.
