Angola: Prominent Journalist Targeted by Predator Spyware

Prominent Angolan journalist Teiseira Candido was targeted by the Predator spyware of the Intellexa company, as revealed by an Amnesty International investigation. The software allowed access to messages, photos and other data from his phone, as well as remote activation of the microphone and camera. The attack occurred in May 2024, when Candido was Secretary-General of the Angolan journalists' union. Amnesty International has not been able to attribute the attack to any specific government, but points out that new laws in Angola have restricted the framework for the media and demonstrations. The attack was carried out via WhatsApp messages containing links to malicious software. Candido stated that he feels exposed after the revelation of the surveillance. This case is part of a broader campaign of spyware use in Angola. Intellexa has not responded to requests for comment regarding the case. Predator software has also been used in other countries, such as Greece, to monitor politicians and journalists.
