Anastasides on Bases: British Have Never Favored Us - Discussion After Solution

Former President of the Republic of Cyprus, Nicos Anastasiades, stated that discussion about the future of British bases in Cyprus is premature under current conditions, commenting on recent developments and the overall security climate in the region. He emphasized that the issue must be examined at two levels: the existence of the bases and the adequacy of the protection measures taken by Britain. Mr. Anastasiades underlined Britain's responsibility to protect the bases and the citizens living in them. He characterized discussion of a possible withdrawal of the bases as untimely, emphasizing the need for calm study and consultations. He referred to the precedent of Mauritius as a good basis for strengthening Cyprus's positions. Despite the fact that the British have not historically favored Cyprus's positions, Mr. Anastasiades believes that the issue of the bases should be examined after the resolution of the Cyprus problem. He recalled an agreement in 2014 with David Cameron for the cession of land from the bases for development, emphasizing the possibility of further steps through dialogue. He also expressed the view that Greece played a crucial role in activating Europe's reflexes after the crisis, with the dispatch of military means and support to Cyprus. At the same time, he criticized the absence of the European Union from the developments, while reiterating the need for Cyprus's accession to NATO, despite Turkey's veto.
