Trade Unions Await Government Actions

Trade unions SEK, PEO, DEOK are awaiting specific actions from the Government following a meeting with President Christodoulides and relevant Ministers. The meeting focused on important issues such as the minimum wage, the European directive on adequate wages, the strategy for employing foreign workers, the 'Ergani 2' program, and pension reform. The unions expressed a desire for a gradual implementation of the reform, provided there is agreement on a roadmap. Minister of Labor, Marinos Mousiouttas, stated that the discussion was constructive and could improve working conditions and the standard of living of workers. He emphasized that there are tools to achieve this goal and that the President requested specific data. Regarding pension reform, the Minister acknowledged differences of opinion but expressed optimism for reaching consensus. He stressed that the Government needs to define the framework and timeline for the second pillar in order to implement the first pillar from 2027. The Minister also commented on reports of potential cuts to high pensions, clarifying that this was one of the scenarios considered, but the Government prefers to find other ways to solve the problem without affecting the acquired rights of pensioners. The General Secretary of PEO, Sotiroula Charalambous, confirmed that the issues concerning workers were discussed.
