Scientists Deem Animal Culling Necessary to Curb Foot-and-Mouth Disease

Scientists and officials emphasized at a press conference in Nicosia that the culling of animals in infected livestock farms is a necessary measure to limit the spread of foot-and-mouth disease. Even asymptomatic animals can transmit the virus, leading to uncontrolled outbreaks. The Minister of Agriculture, Maria Panagiotou, stressed the importance of informed public awareness and the involvement of scientists in an advisory epidemiological team. The disease only affects cloven-hoofed animals (cattle, sheep, goats, and pigs) and does not pose a risk to humans or food safety, although humans can act as carriers of the virus. European legislation provides for animal culling as a measure to contain the epidemic.
