Ercihurman Revives Political Equality Demand, Stalling Cyprus Talks

Ahead of tomorrow's trilateral meeting, Tufan Ercihurman appears to be reintroducing the issue of 'political equality' as a prerequisite for any discussion, following the tactic of Ersin Tatar. This move is seen as an attempt to create a deadlock and prevent progress towards a Cyprus settlement. Ercihurman has already withdrawn his consent for seeking a solution based on UN Security Council resolutions and is setting the acceptance of political equality as the first precondition. However, the Greek Cypriot side does not reject political equality as defined in the resolutions and previous convergences, but opposes the Turkish interpretation that links it to numerical and dominant power. The meetings between Maria Angela Holguin and the two leaders today are expected to shed light on Ercihurman's intentions. The Greek Cypriot side, on the initiative of President Christodoulides, is pushing for the convening of a five-party conference. Ercihurman's stance signals a shift towards Turkish positions and the abandonment of the framework for a solution previously agreed upon. The emphasis on 'political equality' is an attempt to overturn the status quo and promote the two-state solution.
