Mazotos Community Council Demands Recall of Desalination Unit Decision

The Mazotos Community Council is calling for the immediate recall or suspension of the decision to establish a mobile desalination unit in the area. The request is based on a scientific study highlighting the presence of important priority habitats, such as Posidonia oceanica meadows and reefs, protected by European legislation. Locating desalination units near these habitats poses a serious risk of irreversible degradation. The Council emphasizes that the protection of the marine environment and compliance with European and national legal frameworks make the Mazotos area unsuitable for the installation of desalination units under current conditions. They also request the preparation of a comprehensive and independent environmental impact assessment, as well as a documented evaluation of alternative solutions and locations. The Mazotos Community Council has sent a relevant letter to the President of the Republic, the Ministers of Interior and Agriculture, the President of the Larnaca Provincial Self-Governing Organization, parliamentary parties, and the District Officer of Larnaca. The need for transparency and social consensus in decisions regarding the water problem is also underlined. While acknowledging the severity of the water problem in Cyprus, the Mazotos Community Council believes that hasty and arbitrary decisions are unacceptable. To express their protest, they are planning an event next Saturday at 10:00 am near the gas station in Mazotos.
