€1 Billion Needed for School Infrastructure, €35 Million in State Funds

The actual needs for school infrastructure in Cyprus amount to €1 billion, according to the head of the Technical Services Department of the Ministry of Education, Andreas Maragos, who presented the figures to the Parliamentary Education Committee. However, the state budget for 2026 amounts to only €35 million, creating significant limitations in the implementation of necessary projects. Mr. Maragos noted that the planning for the infrastructure is specific, but implementation depends on the approval of the development budget by the Ministry of Finance. He also pointed out that the seismic upgrading of 730 school buildings is ongoing, but 78 schools are still pending, which may need demolition instead of upgrading due to their age. A further problem is the increasing cost of construction, especially in the last decade, and political decisions that affect planning, such as the extension of schooling time in pre-primary education. In addition, the use of prefabricated classrooms as a temporary solution creates difficulties in the construction of new buildings. The President of the School Board of Nicosia, Nikos Megalos, stated that school boards need at least €500,000 to €1 million annually for maintenance. However, the education budget has decreased significantly compared to 2011, despite recent increases, remaining €20 million lower.
