US Involvement with Drones in Nigeria – Return of the US to the Sahel Region

The US military has deployed multiple MQ-9 drones and 200 troops to Nigeria to provide training and intelligence support to the Nigerian army, which is fighting Islamist militants. This deployment marks a return of the US to the Sahel region, following its withdrawal from Niger due to the junta's refusal to continue Western military support. Officials state that the drones are used for intelligence gathering and do not conduct airstrikes. This move comes amid increased activity by militants linked to Islamic State and al-Qaeda in West Africa, and after US airstrikes in northwestern Nigeria. The cooperation is considered a common threat to the security of both countries.
