Management of Human Trafficking Shifts to Ministry of Justice in Cyprus

The management of human trafficking in Cyprus is being transferred from the Deputy Ministry of Migration to the Ministry of Justice, following public outcry over a Channel 4 report regarding sexual harassment and labor exploitation in Ayia Napa. The House Human Rights Committee highlighted inadequacies and gaps in the management of the phenomenon. Minister of Justice Giorgos Fytiris acknowledged that human trafficking is a matter of organized crime and expressed his intention for his Ministry to take responsibility for the issue. DISY MP Rita Supermann is preparing a bill for the immediate transfer of authority. The transfer is considered important for more effective tackling of the crime, however, the need for proper staffing of the Ministry of Justice and genuine political will is emphasized.
