Human Trafficking Oversight to Shift to Justice Ministry – Proposal Submitted

Members of the Parliamentary Committee on Human Rights expressed satisfaction with the agreement regarding the transfer of responsibility for tackling human trafficking from the Deputy Ministry of Migration to the Ministry of Justice and Public Order. Committee President Irene Charalambidou reiterated the willingness to cooperate with the Parliament, while DISY MP Rita Supermann announced the submission of a bill to facilitate this transition, which was prepared in collaboration with the Deputy Ministry of Migration. Deputy Minister of Migration Nicolas Ioannides explained that the management of human trafficking had been transferred to the Deputy Ministry of Migration from the Ministry of Interior, but it was agreed that the responsibility should return to the Ministry of Justice, as most issues relate to crime and the management of criminal records. He thanked the Minister of Justice for his cooperation. Ms. Supermann emphasized the need for the Ministry of Justice to be adequately staffed and that taking over the responsibility will also be an opportunity to upgrade the Police. The Legal Affairs Officer of the Ministry of Justice, Spyros Gallourides, reminded that the management of human trafficking cases involves many services and that coordination is needed, while Senior Police Officer Panagiotis Kountouresis expressed confidence in a positive outcome.
