New National Ambulance Authority to Streamline Emergency Services in Cyprus

The Cypriot Cabinet has approved a bill to establish a National Ambulance Authority, which will oversee and coordinate all ambulance services on the island. The authority will operate under the auspices of the Ministry of Health and will be responsible for the planning, organization, and certification of the suitability and safety of all ambulances. The bill also provides for the operation of an Accident and Emergency Management Center, which will coordinate interventions in the event of mass accidents and emergencies. The creation of the authority and the center represents a significant development for the healthcare sector in Cyprus, as it is the first time that the operation of ambulances has been regulated by legislation. The authority will maintain three registers: Ambulance Service Providers, Ambulances, and Paramedics. Registration in the registers is a prerequisite for the legal provision of services, while strict training and professional competence requirements are defined. The authority will also have powers of control and inspection, as well as the ability to impose sanctions in cases of violations. Emergency pre-hospital care will be provided only by registered and certified providers, while the operation of the Operational Coordination Call Center will ensure the efficient management of calls and the dispatch of ambulances. The collection and utilization of data from the operation of ambulance services will allow for the continuous evaluation and improvement of the system.
