AKEL Proposes Abolition of Social Support Agency

AKEL proposes the abolition of the Social Support Agency within three months of the law's enactment. The bill, co-signed by MPs Kyriakos Hadjigiannis and Alexandra Attalidou, is based on the view that the Agency creates conditions of institutional entanglement. AKEL General Secretary Stefanos Stefanou stated that the Agency, due to its operation within the Presidential Palace and its funding from entrepreneurs seeking public works, creates a “peculiar relationship” that undermines transparency. According to AKEL, the Christodoulides Government rejected efforts to ensure transparency regarding the Agency's sponsors. AKEL does not dispute the Agency's contribution, but believes its abolition is necessary in an era of institutional entanglement and corruption. It proposes transferring the Agency's reserves to the Cyprus State Scholarships Foundation (CSCF) to strengthen student support institutionally and cover more students. The AKEL proposal aims to restore transparency and meritocracy in student support, transforming it from charity to state policy with specific criteria and procedures.
