AKEL Accuses President of Obstructing Justice in Video Scandal

AKEL is escalating its criticism of the Christodoulides government regarding the video scandal, which has sparked strong reactions and damaged the credibility of institutions. The party calls on the President to provide clear answers and take responsibility, as evidence emerging from his associates suggests serious political, institutional, and potentially criminal implications. AKEL emphasizes that resignations are insufficient and explanations are needed regarding the operation of a potential network of collusion and illegal funding within the Presidential Palace. Specifically, AKEL expresses concern that the Presidential Palace is not denying a report in the newspaper "Politis" regarding a teleconference between government officials and an "investor." If the report is confirmed, the government's claim that it had no connection to the activity will collapse, and the existence of an organized network of collusion will be proven. The party stresses that this case has a serious impact on the reputation of the Republic of Cyprus. At the same time, AKEL is addressing the institutions, calling on them to investigate the case effectively, independently, and transparently. AKEL MP Christos Christofides described the case as "one of the biggest scandals in the Republic of Cyprus" and emphasized the need for a full investigation. He stressed that the issue is not closed with resignations and that President Christodoulides owes explanations to the Cypriot people. Mr. Christofides referred to the resignations of the Director of the President's Office and the First Lady from the Social Support Agency, characterizing the Agency as "the stone of the scandal." He noted that the Auditor General's report confirms AKEL's allegations. If the President does not meet the demands for transparency and accountability, AKEL proposes that the government take political responsibility.
