AKEL: Referral of EU-Mercosur Agreement to CJEU a Victory for Farmers and European Societies

AKEL welcomed the European Parliament's decision to temporarily freeze the EU-Mercosur agreement and refer it to the Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU) for a constitutionality review. The party argues that the agreement would have negative consequences for farmers, labor and social standards, the environment, and deforestation in Europe. AKEL views the decision as a significant step against closed-door deals and in favor of transparency and citizen participation. AKEL and the Left Group in the European Parliament played a crucial role in achieving this decision, which was supported by MEPs from various political groups. In contrast, the MEPs from DISY voted against the relevant resolution, choosing, according to AKEL, to support interests that conflict with the interests of farmers and European society. The Mercosur agreement concerns the EU and the countries of Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay, and Uruguay. AKEL's main concern is the potential influx of cheap agricultural products from these countries, which could undermine the competitiveness of European farmers and lead to unfair competition. AKEL emphasizes that the European Parliament's decision sends a strong message in favor of protecting small and medium-sized producers, sustainable rural development, and transparency in decision-making that affects European society and the economy.
