AKEL Criticizes Government's Participation in Trump's 'Peace Council'

AKEL strongly criticized the government for its participation in the 'Peace Council' convened by Donald Trump, characterizing the decision as an 'ideological obsession' that jeopardizes international law and the interests of Cyprus. The party argues that the Christodoulides government is being misled by US efforts to sideline the UN and reshape the international system. AKEL emphasizes that participation in such a council, which includes war criminals like Netanyahu, undermines the legality of Cyprus, which is based on international law and UN resolutions. Furthermore, the party questions the government's justification that the meeting is taking place under a Security Council resolution, as the resolution concerns only the post-war management of Gaza. AKEL accuses the government of promoting a policy that replaces international law with the logic of arms and business interests, endangering the cause of Cyprus and its unity. It points out that such a policy will have negative consequences for Cyprus in the future. AKEL calls on the government to reconsider its position and return to defending international law and the principles governing international relations. It emphasizes that participation in an initiative that violates international law is self-defeating and will lead to negative consequences for Cyprus.
