AKEL Criticizes Government's Handling of Foot-and-Mouth Disease Crisis

AKEL strongly criticized the government's handling of the foot-and-mouth disease crisis, arguing that it was slow to react and seek assistance from the European Union. The party states that a delay in communication with European Commissioner Oliver Várhelyi could have led to different outcomes. Furthermore, AKEL expressed concern over the culling policy in the government-controlled areas, contrasting it with the vaccination allowed in the occupied territories, and warned of a potential drastic reduction in livestock without adequate planning for the future. The party will continue to monitor developments and does not rule out an emergency meeting of the Parliamentary Agriculture Committee. AKEL accused the government of "running behind events" and failing to answer important questions posed to the European Commission regarding crisis management on both sides of Cyprus. The difference in policy for tackling the foot-and-mouth disease (culling in the government-controlled areas versus vaccination in the occupied territories) is a particular concern. The creation and restoration of a livestock farm requires significant time, making careful planning and support for the sector even more urgent. AKEL emphasizes the need for a long-term strategy to address the consequences of the crisis. The party is committed to continuing to monitor the situation and exert pressure to find effective solutions to protect livestock farming and food security in Cyprus.
