EAC: Warning About Scam Regarding Charges for Smart Meters

The Electricity Authority of Cyprus (EAC) is warning the public about a scam regarding alleged charges for the installation of smart electricity meters. The EAC clarifies that it does not request money from citizens for the replacement of conventional meters, as the cost is covered by the Authority itself and by European Recovery and Resilience Facility funds. According to the EAC, fraudsters are sending misleading messages requesting large sums of money for the installation of smart meters through a private electrician – a practice that the EAC characterises as false. The EAC emphasizes that the meters belong to the System Distribution Owner and are installed, maintained or replaced exclusively by the Authority itself, without any financial burden on consumers. EAC personnel use official vehicles and carry an official identity card. The EAC points out that messages sent by its operators do not include amounts of money or payment methods, urging the public to be careful and report suspicious cases.
