Cyprus Prisons See Reduction in Population Through Deportations and Voluntary Departures

From December 10th, 2025, to yesterday, 164 deportations of foreign nationals have been carried out from detention centers and the Central Prisons in Cyprus. Additionally, 450 individuals have voluntarily departed, and 29 have chosen voluntary repatriation, bringing the total number to 643. Government sources report that operations to locate illegal immigrants and the management of prison decongestion are yielding significant results, aiming to reduce overcrowding and effectively control illegal immigration. The government has prioritized reducing prison overcrowding while maintaining control over illegal immigration. Measures are expected to be implemented in January, following discussions between the Attorney General's Office, the Ministry of Justice, and the Deputy Ministry of Foreigners and Migration. One of the measures under consideration is the potential release of approximately 100 foreign prisoners convicted of minor offenses. The implementation of this mechanism will be done with respect for legal and humanitarian frameworks. Government sources emphasized that the implementation of these measures is a government decision and a top priority, aiming to achieve substantial results in addressing the problem.
