Emptying Churches in Germany - Rapid Decline in Believers, Solutions Sought

Germany is experiencing a rapid decline in church attendance, leading to the closure and repurposing of many church buildings. In 2024 alone, the two major churches lost over a million members. Between 2000 and 2024, 611 Catholic and 300-350 Protestant churches have closed. These buildings are finding new uses, such as bicycle shops, boxing arenas, pubs, libraries, and even hotels, reflecting a shift in religious practice and societal needs. In some cases, churches are being converted into housing, addressing the housing crisis. This process, while practical, is emotionally charged for believers.
