Farmers vs Mercosur: A Small Victory Against Big Interests

The recent decision of the European Parliament to 'freeze' the EU-Mercosur Agreement represents a small but significant victory for European farmers against large economic interests. The agreement, negotiated by the Commission behind closed doors, threatens to undermine small and medium-sized farmers and ranchers by opening the door to massive imports of agricultural products from Latin American countries. This decision came after strong reactions and dynamic mobilizations of farmers, as well as the decisive contribution of the Left in the European Parliament. The Left stood on the side of the peoples of Europe, in contrast to the Right, which supported the agreement. The Mercosur agreement has negative impacts not only on the agricultural economy but also on social and labor rights, as well as the environment, reinforcing environmental destruction and deforestation. The promotion of the agreement highlights the deficits of democracy and dialogue within the EU. The Left points out that the agreement should be examined by the Court of the European Union to determine its compatibility with the EU Treaties, while demanding a European policy that protects farmers and the environment.
