Soaring Cost of Student Life in Cyprus: Sky-High Rents and Financial Struggles

Cyprus has emerged as a significant educational hub, with the student population doubling in the last decade to reach 53,000. 56% of students come from abroad, demonstrating the attractiveness of studying in Cyprus. However, despite the sector's growth, students face significant financial difficulties, mainly due to the high cost of living, especially regarding housing. Students report that rents are exorbitant, with a studio apartment costing between €450 and €550 and a one-bedroom apartment between €600 and €700. The total monthly cost of living for a student can reach €1,200, making it difficult for families with low incomes to cope. The lack of adequate student grants and the absence of basic infrastructure, such as a university clinic, exacerbate the situation. Students at the University of Cyprus emphasize the need to improve labor rights during internships and implement repeat exams. They also urge the government to take measures to reduce rents and strengthen student grants to ensure access to education for all. Student organizations have launched a campaign to restore €28 million that was cut from state student grants after 2013, arguing that this money is essential for students in real need. The situation requires immediate attention to ensure the sustainability of student life in Cyprus.
