Workers in Support Programs of the Ministry of Education Demand Permanent Employment

Workers in the support programs of the Ministry of Education held a 24-hour strike and marched to the Presidential Palace, demanding the conversion of their contracts to permanent positions, as stipulated by the 2003 legislation and court decisions. Representatives of the trade unions, PASY PEO and OEKDY SEK, accused the government of refusing to respect court decisions and attempting to maintain workers in a state of job insecurity. They expressed hope that the government will submit legislation that complies with European law and legislation, satisfying their legitimate demands. The General Secretary of PASY PEO, Andreas Kounnis, stressed that the workers will not back down and will continue their struggle until they are vindicated, while the General Secretary of OEKDY SEK, Giorgos Konstantinou, stated that the massive participation in the strike demonstrates the workers' determination not to tolerate further injustices. The Minister of Education, Athena Michaelidou, has already admitted that the workers are right. The trade unions submitted a memorandum to the President of the Republic, Nikos Christodoulides, expressing their concern about the proposed legislation, which, they say, does not guarantee jobs and ignores court decisions. They emphasize the need to end job insecurity and recognize the rights of workers. The memorandum stresses that workers want to present the President with the serious issues they face, regarding job insecurity, dignity and legality. They express the hope that the government will do its duty and satisfy their legitimate demands, otherwise their struggle will continue.
