Was the 1900 Founding of the English School a 'Ripe Child of Necessity'? The British Need for its Creation

The founding of the English School in Cyprus in 1900 was not a random event, but a result of the social and political conditions of the time. Following British rule, Cyprus experienced economic growth, population increase, and expansion of transport. These changes led to increased demand for education and the creation of an environment conducive to the establishment of new schools. At the same time, British policy, after the initial imperial expansion, turned to a policy of minimal intervention, allowing the development of private initiatives in the field of education. The founding of the English School was, therefore, a logical development, responding to the needs of the time and the political priorities of Britain.
