Foot-and-Mouth Disease Battle in Cyprus Could Take Six Months

Cyprus is at the beginning of the battle against foot-and-mouth disease, with the control of the disease estimated to take up to six months, depending on the progress of vaccinations. The disease will be considered controlled when the virus is no longer detected in the country. A return to the status of a foot-and-mouth disease-free country will follow a few months later. The virus, although not always fatal, causes a significant reduction in milk production and difficulty in animal recovery. The spread of the virus would be dramatic without control, with a possible reduction in milk production of up to 50%. Cyprus is facing economic consequences due to the reduction in milk and meat, as well as restrictions on exports. However, halloumi production is not affected due to the milk boiling process.
