Honey Production in Cyprus Down by Up to 30% Due to Weather Conditions

Honey production in Cyprus is expected to decrease by up to 30% due to adverse weather conditions. Senior Agricultural Officer Lysandros Lysandrides states that pressure on bee populations is a global issue, with significant losses in countries like Bulgaria and the United States. In Cyprus, losses are smaller due to the experience of beekeepers, but production is significantly affected by high temperatures, drought, fires, and urbanization, which reduce available pollen and nectar. The government provides support through various programs, but the biggest problem remains unfair competition from cheap imported honey, mainly from China, which threatens the sustainability of Cypriot honey.
