‘We Have Other Work, Madam’ – Authorities Must Investigate Gender-Based Violence Complaints

The Secretary-General of POGO emphasized the need for a thorough investigation of reports of gender-based violence, referring to the cases of the Mayor of Paphos and Mr. Sykas. She stressed that the competent authorities must proceed with all legal procedures, without compromise or delay. Ms. Evagoru characterized issues of domestic violence as complex and reiterated the need to improve the system. Ms. Evagoru mentioned that she herself had faced difficulties in communicating with the authorities regarding cases of abused women, resulting in responses such as “we have other work, madam.” This highlights the lack of priority given to such cases and the need for a change in mindset. The Secretary-General of POGO stressed that addressing gender-based violence requires a holistic approach, including prevention, protection of victims, and punishment of perpetrators. POGO is ready to cooperate with the authorities to achieve this goal. The need for immediate and effective investigation of gender-based violence complaints is imperative to ensure the protection of women and prevent further incidents of abuse.
