Police Raid European Commission Over Property Sale Investigation

Belgian police raided the European Commission as part of an investigation into potential irregularities in the sale of properties. The searches, conducted in various offices in Brussels, concern the sale of 23 buildings acquired by the Belgian state investment fund SFPIM in 2024, worth 900 million euros. The investigation is being carried out by the European Public Prosecutor's Office (EPPO) and relates to transactions that took place during Johannes Hahn's term as Commissioner for Budget. The Commission had stated that the sale was carried out through a tender process, in accordance with EU regulations. The EPPO confirmed the investigation but provided no further information to avoid jeopardizing the inquiry. Olaf and the Belgian federal police declined to comment, while the European Commission, SFPIM, and Mr. Hahn have not yet responded to requests for comment.
