Drastic Measures Coming to Curb Foot-and-Mouth Disease

The government is preparing to announce new, drastic measures to address the spread of foot-and-mouth disease in Cyprus. These measures were discussed at an emergency meeting chaired by the Minister of Justice and Public Order, Costas Phytis, with the participation of the Minister of Agriculture, Rural Development and Environment and the Veterinary Services. To date, cases have been identified in eleven livestock units in the areas of Troulloi, Oroklini, Livadia and Aradippou, affecting approximately 14,000 animals (cattle, pigs and sheep). The process of slaughtering and burying infected animals has begun, while disinfection systems have been installed and strict biosecurity measures are being implemented in the affected areas. The meeting resulted in the activation of a special national plan to address the situation and the operation, on a 24-hour basis, of a Crisis Management Center at the Coordination Center “ZENON”. The Center will bring together all involved services for unified operational management, clear allocation of responsibilities and continuous coordination of actions. The new measures are expected to be announced within the next few hours. Livestock farmers across Cyprus are on alert, as the spread of foot-and-mouth disease threatens production and the economy of the sector. The government is committed to taking all necessary measures to limit the spread of the disease and protect animal production.
